The Deer In The MCycle Headlights

Posted by hujim on 05/25/2005 in cycle stuff with No Comments

There are many different theories about what you are supposed to do if you cross paths with a deer or similar animal in the middle of the night. If you are riding a bike at night, you want to pay closer attention to what you can do to scare off the deer because they can be more dangerous for you than a car.

One problem with deer is that once they see your headlights they are frozen; sometimes it seems that no matter what you do they will not move. If you have a deer frozen in your headlights one thing that you can try doing is honking a horn or making some other kind of loud noise, sometimes this will startle them enough to cause them to run away.

If making noise doesn’t work the next best thing to do is to flash your headlights at them, make sure you do it repeatedly. Flashing the headlights seems to break the daze they have so that they get their wits about them so they can run off into the brush away from the road.
