However, with motorcycles first gear is a very useful gear.

One of the main uses for first gear is starting the motorcycle. When you first start up your motorcycle you want to have it in first gear, but you also want to have it in first gear when you first start off driving, even though you will quickly change up as your speed increases.

First gear is also a great gear for stopping in. When you are approaching a red light you automatically start slowing down using the brakes, but you also have to downshift to match your speed. When you are driving slow enough to be in first if the light changes to green you can immediately pick your speed back up, by staying in first gear at a stop you are also ready to immediately drive off, just change gears as you increase your speed.
